grade 12 project

As per tradition, each graduating student must complete a 3 phase project in order to receive their final band credit. Project submissions are due in June and will be complete with a final presentation in front of Symphonic Band / Wind Ensemble (applicable for members of Wind Ensemble only) for the creative piece (see phase 3). Below you will find the project’s requirements as written by the Maples Band teachers.

PHASE I: CONNECTIONS

Type up a reflection on your time in the band program and its people. Think of the memories you have made and ask yourself what your future looks like.

350-word minimum reflection write-up.

  • Explain what your ‘life plan’ is for the next few years.

  • Make creative connections to how your experiences and personal growth in Band Class will help you along your life path beyond high school.

  • Think outside the box.

PHASE II: REPORT CARDS

By the time a student graduates, we band teachers would have written 8 report card comments for you.

The project asks to write one ‘report card’ comment for each teacher: Loganberg, Manuel, and Clendenan.

Report Card comments are written in three parts: Strengths, Weaknesses & Next Steps.  We do this to celebrate the excellent things you do, recognize the areas for growth, and give feedback on how to improve.

Be honest; you cannot hurt our feelings, and we love to improve through your feedback.

  • Tell us about our good qualities as a teacher. Let us know if there are any experiences we’ve had in band that stick out to you as really positive (strengths)!

  • Tell us about our not-so-good qualities as teachers (weaknesses).

  • Provide us advice for future years as a teacher (next-steps).

PHASE III: CREATIVITY

CREATE something! You can work individually or with a small group of people (3-4 max).  A 3-to 10-minute presentation will accompany your final product.

You can choose ONE of the goals in this phase: Looking forward OR looking back.

LOOKING BACK: Similar to Phase I, reflect on your band experience over the last four years and turn it into a creative outlet (see below).

LOOKING FORWARD: Create something to give back to the program. Leave a piece of your legacy by creating something that’ll benefit the future band students of Maples.

Final product ideas:

  • Video

  • Art piece

  • Podcast

  • Song

  • Vlog/blog

  • Skit/drama

  • Room decorations

  • Band or Jazz room repairs/upgrades

  • Etc.
